HAPPENINGS

Save Me A Seat, PLEASE!

Where do you want to sit on Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur at CSAIR?

Membership 5778Do you want to sit in the seat you've had for years or maybe the one you tried last year? Or would you like to experience a different section of the sanctuary or, perhaps, the parallel service downstairs in the Taub Room?

This year, all High Holiday seats, regardless of their location, will cost the same. You may, if you choose, return to seats that you had last year. If you would like to sit in a new place, we will make every effort to accommodate the request. We will save the seat you want, but we have to receive the membership renewal form from you by Tuesday, August 1.

So please, fill-out the membership forms. You should have received our packet in the mail. Please return them to the office with your check or payment preference or do it safely and securely online.

Whichever form of payment you decide, please submit it no later than Tuesday, August 1.

And, please, remember that in the past our annual dues have not reflected the actual cost of running the shul-currently $3,300 per member. So this year, we established a new category of membership Sustainer that equals that cost. If you can, please consider stretching to become a Sustaining Member, or even make gifts of greater amounts as Leaders, Guardians, or Pillars to help us maintain our beautiful building and our full schedule of inspiring services and engaging programs. (Click here to see a table of all membership levels.)

The View from Whitefish, Montana: Francine Roston
Responding to Anti-Semitism in America

Rabbi Francine Roston
Glacier Jewish Community/B'nai Shalom of MT

Saturday, July 22, 2017
Dvar Torah during shul and discussion after Kiddush.

In December 2016, the Jewish Community of Whitefish MT was the  focus of anti-Semitic cyber-terrorist attacks initiated by Neo-Nazis and White Supremacists. Hear Rabbi Roston share the impact of this experience on the local Jewish community and the various supportive responses from neighbors in Montana and people across the country.  Rabbi Roston will also update us on the legal battle against the perpetrators.

This free event is sponsored by the Gerson Cohen Institute for Adult Jewish Learning.

Make A Minyan, Make A Difference!
Morning and Evening Minyans could benefit from your presence. Please join us especially Monday mornings at 7am and Tuesday evenings at 7:30pm for our daily minyanim. Sometimes life intervenes and the minyan falls short. If you can commit to once a week or once a month, you give a substantial good to your synagogue and your neighbors. Please attend morning/evening minyans.

Riverdale Jewish Project

Explore Brooklyn Pub Crawl
Sunday, July 30

Details | RSVP by Monday, July 24

We're going on a Brooklyn Literary Pub Crawl led by a professional tour guide from NYC, Literary Pub Crawls.

Hitting three neighborhoods in Brooklyn, this tour covers some of the last sections of historically protected Brooklyn. Through the stunning and varying architecture, the winding streets, and the three pubs we hit, you will wander back in time to the founding of this great city and the nation, while learning of the great literary and artistic tradition that the neighborhood fostered.

We'll visit Brooklyn's oldest bar, see the effects of gentrification and of the modifications of Robert Moses, follow some of the routes of the Underground Railroad, and learn how Brooklyn became the most famous borough in the world.

Many Migrations:
My Story as a Cuban Jew

Presented by professor and author Ruth Behar

She will also discuss her creative work as a novelist and poet bringing Jewish-Cuban stories, memories, and sensibilities into American literature.

ADULT EDUCATION

Adult Bat/Bar Mitzvah Course

Adult Bar-Bat Mitvah ClassesPerhaps you never had the chance to ascend the bimah as a Bat or Bar Mitzvah. Maybe you did, but want to do it again, at a time in your life when you will appreciate your connection to Judaism in a different way.

On Wednesday evenings this fall, we hope to offer a course designed for adult learners of any age who want to have this experience. It will provide an in-depth study of the Jewish lifecycle, holidays, history, and core Jewish concepts. You will learn to chant from the Torah and participate in a Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony in Spring 2019.

No prior experience is necessary. If you need to learn/improve your Hebrew reading, we will work together to find a tutor/class who can help you. The class will be taught by Rabbi Katz, Cantor Stevens, and others. We would like to gauge interest. If you are interested, please reply to secretary@csair.org.
